Vox entered the "travel" or "mini" guitar market segment with the introduction of the SDC-1 Mini in 2019. Vox added two additional mini guitar models in following years, the Mark III Mini in 2021 and the Mark V Mini in 2024. Vox utilized a clever engineering trick when designing the SDC-1. While the SDC-1 Mini had a short, ¾ scale length of about 18¾" (479mm), the nut was ~1⅝" (42mm) wide, making the neck similar in width to a standard scale guitar. This combination of a short, ¾ scale length with a standard width neck not only made the transition to playing the SDC-1 Mini easy, it facilitated greater finger reach for chordal or lead playing. The 19 fret maple neck was topped with a purpleheart fretboard, a long grained hardwood grown in Central and South America. Purpleheart is actually harder than rosewood. The SDC-1 Mini came factory equipped with .012-.054 round wound strings. While it might seem counterintuitive, these heavy gauge strings, when combined with the 18¾" scale length, allowed the SDC-1 Mini to have the same string tension and E-A-D-G-B-E tuning of a standard full scale guitar. Specially designed 18:1 tuner pegs facilitate accurate tuning adjustment. The dual cutaway SDC-1 Mini body was made of poplar and offered in red, white or black finishes. The SDC-1 Mini was equipped with one humbucking pickup with volume and tone controls. A chrome plated steel bridge offered micro adjustment of string height and intonation. A gig bag and wrenches for truss and bridge adjustment were also included.
