The Vox Corinthian Organ - A Look "Under the Hood"

Vox Corinthian Tone Generator Circuit Cards with Couplates - While the Vox 304E Jaguar and the Vox Corinthian organs share the same tone generation circuitry, the Corinthian streamlined the circuit implementation.

Like the V304E Jaguar organ that preceded it, the Vox Corinthian organ had twelve solid-state tone generator printed circuit cards, one for each note of the musical scale (Fig 1). Each of these twelve tone generator cards had a "master oscillator" and a three-stage, laddered "octave divider" circuit. The master oscillator circuit used a SFT351 germanium transistor, several capacitors and a tuning coil (Fig. 2) to produce the highest pitches needed by the organ. The output from the master oscillator circuit was then fed serially through the three-stage ladder of "octave divider" circuits on the tone generator cards. Each of the octave divider circuits dropped the pitch from the master oscillator by an additional octave, producing the additional three octaves of tones to complete the main section of the organ. Each of the three octave divider circuits utillized a pair of SFT351 germanium transistors, seven resistors and two capacitors.

While the seven resistors and two capacitors in each octave divider circuit on the V304E Jaguar organ were individual, discrete components mounted directly to the tone generator circuit card, the Vox Corinthian utilized modular, mustard colored "couplates" (Fig. 3) that incorporated the seven resistors and two capacitors from the divider circuits into one molded subassembly. Moving these resistors and capacitors from the circuit board to a couplate greatly simplified the layout and fabrication of the tone generator card. These couplates were reminiscent of an early version of an integrated circuit.

The Vox Corinthian tone generator cards were powered by a three conductor cable assembly from the power supply that had red, white and black wires (Fig. 2). The output from the tone generator circuitry was located on the opposite side of the circuit cards where it joined the signal distribution cabling (Fig. 1) to complete connection to the keyboard contacts.
