Vox Medium Scale Flat Wound Bass Strings - 1966

Although Vox guitars first appeared in a 1960 magazine advertisement and later in the 1962 "Vox - Choice of the Stars" catalog, Vox branded replacement strings seem to be first offered in the "Vox - Precision in Sound" catalog in 1963.
Ever willing to exploit their relationship with the popular UK instrumental band, the Shadows, Vox branded some of their guitar strings as "The Shadows Supermatic" and bass strings as "The Shadows Bassmatic." Either were offered as either round wound or tape (flat) wound. The association that Vox drew between the Shadows and Vox guitars, basses and replacement strings was most curious as the Shadows never actually played Vox guitars, only Vox amps.
Vox also offered premium "Phantom" branded round wound and tape wound strings.
Vox sourced their privately labeled guitar and bass strings from the UK manufacturer Rotosound. An original set of Vox/Rotosound tape wound strings is pictured at left. A 1964 JMI catalog image offering Vox guitar and bass strings is seen below. |
