Voxton X-212 Semi-Acoustic Bass Guitar - 1969-1970

Voxton X-212 Semi-Acoustic Bass Guitar

The 1968 US Vox catalog offered forty-six individual models of guitars and basses. It is unlikely that any other manufacturer offered a larger variety of stringed instruments in the late 1960's than Vox. The entire 1968 Vox guitar lineup was produced for Thomas Organ by Eko of Recanati, Italy.

Thomas Organ revamped and simplified the US Vox guitar line in 1969. Only two of the prior forty-six Italian made Vox guitars were included in the 1969 "The New Sound for the New Scene" Vox product catalog; the Country Western and the Folk XII. Thomas Organ liquidated the remaining forty-four models of Italian made Vox guitars in the 1969 and 1970 Vox dealer price lists.

Thomas Organ replaced the departing Italian made Eko/Vox instruments with a new in-house guitar brand they named "Voxton." Produced for Thomas Organ in Japan, the Voxton line was comprised of twelve models: eight acoustic guitars, three six-string electrics and one four-string bass.

The 16" wide, 1¾" deep double bound body of the Voxton X-212 bass guitar was constructed of laminated birch plywood with a sunburst finish. It included a hinged tail piece and a fully adjustable bridge. It's 21 fret, 30¼" short-scale detachable "fast action" birch neck was 1 9/16" wide where it joined the head stock. The 20¾" rosewood fret board featured dot style position markers. The neck joined the double cutaway
body at the seventeenth fret. The Voxton X-212 also featured a three position pickup selector switch, volume and tone controls for each pickup, a lever actuated string mute and individual enclosed tuners.

The 1969 retail price for the Voxton X-212 bass guitar was $129.50 plus case. Adjusted for fifty years of inflation, the X-212 bass would retail for about $919 today.
