AC-100CPH Head with Vintage Vox Cosmetics with One Reissue Vox T-100 2x15 Cabs for Bass
Back in the 1960's, while the Beatles toured the world, Paul McCartney played a JMI Vox AC-100 head through one or two specially built Vox T-100 cabs with two 15" speakers in each. When combined with a 1962 era Hofner Beatle bass, this combination gave Paul that lyrical "Beatle tone" that many have sought to recreate.
Historically, Vox built the first AC-100 head for Paul McCartney. It was an "all tube" design based on the AC-30 top boost preamp channel powering a special new 100 watt RMS output section based on four EL-34 tubes. The 2x15" T-100 cab was also a Paul McCartney "first" for Vox. This cab provided the power handling needed for this new head, and provided a deeper tone with more projection than the identically sized T-60 cab he had used to that time (which featured one 15" and one 12" speaker).
Until now, if you wanted to recreate this Paul McCartney tone today, you would first have to locate a vintage Vox AC-100 head that still worked after 40 years of use. These heads have been sold on eBay for as much as $10,000 in recent years.
Fast forward to now. Vox has reissued the the AC-100 head, now calling it the AC-100CPH. Just like the original JMI AC-100 head, the AC100CPH head features an all tube design, using the same ECC83 and EL-34 tubes and diode rectification as used in the original 1964 design. The AC-100CPH has two channels...the first being based on the AC-30 Top Boost preamp, again just as in the 1964 JMI AC-100 amp, but this time with additional tone and gain features not offered in the day. You can read all about this head in detail by clicking here.
For this new amp, North Coast Music has modified the front panel appearance of the AC-100CPH head by installing Vox grill cloth and gold fascia to make the new head look more like a vintage Vox amp. These cosmetic modifications do not affect the warranty of the amp. When combined with a North Coast Music, Vox licensed, T-100 2x15" speaker cab and a NCM-055 rigid stand to support the amp (the AC-100CPH amp head and chassis is about six inches wider than a T-100 speaker cab, and the AC100CPH chassis will not fit inside a vintage sized AC-100 head cab), you can have that fabulous "Beatle tone" for your Hofner bass, as well.
How does it sound? As you might know, I own a very large collection of Vox amps. In that collection, I own both a 1964 JMI Vox AC-100 Mk1 and a 1965 JMI Vox AC-100 Mark II amp head. I have compared the new AC-100CPH for bass with these vintage Vox heads and found that the first (AC-30 preamp) channel of the AC-100CPH head. works just as well, if not even better, than either of my vintage AC-100 heads. I actually prefer the larger comtrol range of the tone controls on the new amp over the vintage AC-100s.
At this time, covers are not available for either the speaker cab or the head, sorry.
