AC-50CPH Head with Vintage Vox Cosmetics with One Reissue Vox AC-50 "1965 classic" Big Box Speaker Enclosure and Trolley
When Vox introduced the new AC-50CPH "Classic Plus" amplifier head, it was just a natural that North Coast Music would come up with a "vintage look" AC-50 speaker enclosure and trolley to mate with this new amp top.
North Coast Music starts by reworking the front cosmetics of the AC-50CPH head. We install Vox grill cloth on the upper half of the front panel, along with a classic gold fascia to divide the fret cloth from the vinyl area of the amplifier. Next, we install the smaller Vox logo in the upper left hand corner of the front of the amp, just as JMI Vox did in the 1960s. These cosmetic modications do not affect your warranty in any way.
How does the new AC-50CPH compare to a vintage JMI Vox AC-50 head? Just like the original JMI AC-50 head, the AC50CPH head features an all tube design, using the same ECC83 and EL-34 tubes as used in 1964. The AC-50CPH has two channels...the first being based on the AC-30 Top Boost preamp, again just as in the 1964 JMI AC-50 amp, but this time with additional tone and gain features not offered in 1964. The second channel is designed to give modern overdriven tones and features. You can read all about the details regarding this head in detail by clicking here.
Next North Coast Music provides one of our hand built, licensed by Vox UK, AC-50 "big box" enclosures, featuring two North Coast Music 30 watt "Black Dog" 12" speakers wired to 16 ohms. Like the original JMI cabinet, the all cabinet panels are made from baltic birch, and feature rabbetted joinery throughout. Correct British made vinhyde and gold recessed string is installed into the cabinet to properly match the amplifier head.
There is even a provision to mount a Midax horn, should you be able to find one, but, in reality, you will never need it. The new AC-50CPH heads have plenty of treble without the help of a horn. A removable cover plate internally fills the Midax mounting hole if you choose to not install a horn. Incidentally, I do not offer these horns, and I have no source for them as well. Midax ceased making these in the late 1970s.
How does it sound? As you might know, I own a very large collection of Vox amps. I have compared the new AC-50CPH with vintage Vox AC-50 heads and found that these new amps can accurately reproduce the sounds of the old amps, but can just as easily give you modern guitar tones as well, including overdriven M*rsh*ll type tonalities. I actually prefer the larger control range of the tone controls on the new amp over the vintage AC-50s.
