| How much vinyl or vinhyde do I need to order? |
| If you make the decision do recover your old Vox amplifier, you will need to compute the amount of material you will need to do the job. This page will help you through this process. I will not compute this for you, you will have to do it yourself.
Most Vox amplifiers and amp heads are covered with one long continuous piece of vinyl that starts on the bottom near an edge, wraps all the way around the cabinet, over both sides and the top, before meeting again at the bottom where the wrap started. At the point where the vinyl would overlap, a "wallpaper" seam is made, cutting from front to back of the cabinet though the overlapped seam, and removing the excess stock from both ends of the vinyl. You are left with a perfectly cut seam when you remove the excess material. To measure, then, you will need to measure the outside of the cabinet, all around all four sides. Add about six inches to this measurement for overlapping. Divide the number of inches by 36. This gives you the number of yards needed for the wrap around the cabinet. Any fractional amount of a yard must be rounded up to the next yard. If you are only familiar with the metric system, one yard is about 90% of one meter An example: A particular Vox cabinet is 31" high and 27" wide. The distance around the outside of this cabinet is 116". Add six inches for overlapping. Now we have 122". Divide 122" by 36 to get the number of yards needed. After dividing, you get about 3.4 yards. Round this up to 4 yards. There will be plenty of extra vinyl for the back panels and for a front vinyl badge, should your amp have one. However, you will have a lot of scrap vinyl when you are done. Covering just one cabinet will give you quite a bit of waste. Installation: At North Coast Music, I use a sheet coating machine with animal hyde glue to install the vinyl on our cabinets. As this machine costs about $10,000, you won't be able to do this. I have heard that some people have used some of the 3M aerosol spray adhesives to apply vinyl for their recover projects, but I have not personally tried this, nor do I endorse this method. Part of the fun is coming up with your own way. |
