The innovative Vox Apache 2 Bass includes a number of unusual features not commonly found in other bass guitars. However, let's set the unusual features aside for a moment and look at the instrument itself.
The Apache 2 Bass features the iconic "coffin" body shape developed by Vox in the 1960s. Many famous British and US performers including Phil "Fang" Volk of Paul Revere and the Raiders used these unusually shaped Vox basses.
The new Apache 2 bass has a 30" scale. It features a basswood body, a bolt on maple neck with an adjustable truss rod, individual vintage style tuner keys and a rosewood fret board. The chrome plated steel bridge has four individual saddles allowing for accurate adjustment of both intonation and action. The bass includes a single coil pickup with four pole pieces, mounted into the "bridge" position of the pick guard. A standard 1/4" jack allows connection to any guitar amplifier.
The Apache 2 Bass is set apart from all other guitars by the inclusion of an internal pick guard mounted amplifier and "drum box."
The one watt battery powered amplifier in the Apache 2 Bass was originally designed for the Vox AC1RV Rhythm Vox amplifier. It features Volume, Gain, and Tone controls plus a Bright switch. A 4" speaker is mounted in the pick guard. Also included are a head phone jack that mutes the speakers, an input for an MP3 player, a digital "E" string tuner and a standby switch. Battery power is supplied by six AA cells. Vox indicates that the battery life should exceed twenty hours.
The maximum output level of the internal amplifier is suitable for practice but not really loud enough for live performance situations.
The drum box circuitry in the Apache 2 Bass also plays through the internal pick guard speaker. The ten onboard rhythm patterns include not just standards such as 8 beat, 16 beat, and blues; but also funk, reggae, and even complex irregular patterns. There's also one song pattern containing an extended, multi-measure drum part. In addition, each rhythm pattern and song pattern provides six types of variation, for a total of 66 rhythm variations. The tempo and volume of each of the rhythm pattern are controllable and you can quickly recall a rhythm pattern with the twist of a knob.
