 Here we see a stack of tops and backs for Beatle Basses. These are made from two "book matched" pieces about 3/4 (13mm) in thickness. After the glue has dried, a special computer operated machine carves out the "bowl" of the top on both sides. I was amazed to find that this "bowl" has been carefully designed to be thicker in some places, and thinner in others, to enhance tone. This computer operated shaper allows this to be achieved with a tolerance to thousands of an inch.

Final shaping of the back is done by hand by a Hofner master craftsman.



In this picture we see the sides of the Beatle Bass being passed through a machine that planes the body edge to the exact thickness required.
