How Does the Hofner Conrtemporary Series Beatle Bass differ from the Hofner Icon Series Beatle Bass?
Both the Icon and Contemporary Basses are made in China. Both use tuners, pick guards, control panels, input jacks, switches, and knobs sourced in either China or Korea. The Icon has Chinese pickups and pickup rings built to Hofner specifications. The bodies and necks on either bass are built in China. Both basses have a polyurethane fiish, but the finish on the Icon is slightly less yellow in the center, and modeled after the color of the finish of a 1961 Hofner bass. A primary difference is that the Contemporary Beatle Bass has a solid sound block in the middle of the body and Hofner staple pickups, while the Icon Beatle Bass does not. German made Hofner Beatle Basses do not have this sound block, as well. This sound block changes the tone of the Contemporary Beatle Bass so that it sounds a bit more like a solid body bass. The Contemporary Series basses are about twice as expensive than the Icon Series basses. Neither the Contemporary or the Icon will have the general quality or tone you would come to expect of the German made Hofner Beatle Basses. While very nice produucts, one can only expect standard Chinese type quality on either. You "get what you pay for."

The Hofner Contemporary Bass came yesterday, it is AWESOME!.The neck and finish are super, most people would not know its made in China. Looks like a German one to me. Sound is very good, great sustain, sounds German !! Plays as good as my German Club 500/2.

Those seeking to purchase the least expensive Hofner Beatle Bass may choose to purchase the Hofner Icon Beatle Bass. However, those that wish to purchase a Hofner Beatle Bass much more like the German models but still want to save some money should take a good look at the Hofner Contemporary Series Beatle Bass.
I know that many of you are anxious to hear how this new Contemporary Series bass compares to the Hofner V63 or V62 German produced basses, so please read the following carefully to understand the differences.
Before I proceed, please understand that the Hofner V62, V63, Deluxe, and Cavern basses are hand made in Germany by Hofner, but the Hofner Contemporary Beatle Bass is produced in China. The Contemporary Beatle Bass is modeled after the popular German Hofner V63 model.
The Hofner Contemporary Beatle Bass includes genuine Hofner H511B Hofner Bass staple pickups and surrounds - the same pickup installed in the German made Hofner V62 and V63 Beatle basses. The bridge, pickguard, and tuners installed on the Contemporary Beatle bass are made in China, but are very close in appeararnce and function to the V63 German made Beatle Bass components.
German made Hofner Beatle basses all have a "zero" fret, as does the Contemporary bass.
German made Hofner V63 and V62 basses both have a cantilevered neck extension that rises away from the body to allow the genuine "Hofner Beatle Bass guitar strap" to be used. The Contemporary bass has this same cantilvered neck extension. The Hofner Contemporary bass now also features a neck with white binding, a feature not shown on the pictures at left.
German made Beatle basses have a gold Hofner logo, as do the Contemporary basses.
The Contemporary Series Beatle bass has a spruce plywood top and a maple plywood back. The German produced V62, V63, Deluxe, and Cavern basses all feature premium German spruce tops and German premium maple backs.
The Contemporary Beatle Bass has a solid block that runs thorough the inside of the body under the pickup area. The German made basses do not have this sound block. This sound block tends to increase the string sustain on the Contemporary Series Bass.
The Contemporary Series Bass has round wound strings. North Coast Music can offer you the flat wound Hofner strings, but we do not install these prior to shipment.
This Contemporary Series bass is finished in a sunburst finish that closely mirrors the German V62 and V63 basses. Black is also available.
To compare to the Hofmer Contemporary with the lesser expensive Hofner Icon bass, I suggest you do the math: Hofner Icon Basses are sold for the discount price of $418 with case. If you just added the cost of two Hofner staple pickups ($200 each x 2) to this discount Icon Beatle Bass price, you would already have spent enough money to purchase the more desirable Hofner Contemporary Beatle Bass.
