Hofner Basses - Hofner H185 Contemporary Club Series Bass - Hand selected at the Hofner warehouse for North Coast Music by Doctor Vox
If you were wishing to buy a Hofner Club bass, but not willing or do not have the funds available to purchase the Hofner Club Basses produced in Germany (or purchase an inaccurate replica), this genuine Hofner Contemporary Series Club Bass may just be the ticket for you.
Here is how the Hofner Contemporary Club Bass compares to the German made Hofner Club Bass.
Initially, it is important to understand that the original Hofner Club Bass is made in Germany by Hofner, but the Hofner Contemporary Club bass is produced in the Orient.
The tone of the Icon Club Bass will be quite similar to the German made Club Bass especially if flat wound Hofner bass strings are installed on the Contemporary. The Contemporary Club Bass has the exact same "staple" pickup as used on the German model.
A major difference between the basses is that the Hofner Contemporary Club Bass a solid sound block under the pickups, bridge and tailpiece unlike the totally hollow body of the German Club. This block causes the Contemporary Bass to have more sustain than a German Hofner Club Bass, more like you might expect from a solid body. This sound block also makes the Contemporary Club bass heavier than the German counterpart.
Aside from the pickups, the Contemporary Club bass does not have any German bass hardware. The bridge, tailpiece, tuners, switches, pots and pickguard are all of Oriental origin. Their appearance suggests the appearance of the German parts, but tonally and visually may not be the same as those on a German Club bass.
Both basses have a "zero" fret.
The Contemporary Series Club bass has a spruce plywood top and a maple plywood back. The German produced Club Bass features premium German spruce tops and German premium maple backs.
The Contemporary Series Club Bass is finished in a polyurethane finish, the German made Hofner Beatle basses are finished in nitro cellulose lacquer.
A genuine Hofner hard shell case, covered in brown vinyl and featuring a black plush interior, is included with the purchase of a Hofner Contemporary Club Bass at North Coast Music.
