FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS ABOUT STRINGS
FAQ1: Is it true that I should only install Hofner, LaBella, or Pyramid bass strings on my German Hofner bass?
A: Yes, this is true. You should only restring German Hofner basses with strings from Hofner, LaBella or Pyramid. These strings are lower pressure than conventional strings, and are easier on the neck. Using conventional, high pressure bass strings on a Hofner bass can lead to your bass developing a substantial forward bow in the neck, possibly ruining your bass. The truss rod adjusting range on the German basses is designed to accomodate Hofner or Pyramid strings.
These strings will easily fit on either a Hofner Contemporary or Icon bass. It is not mandatory that you use Hofner or Pyramid strings on the Contemporary or Icon basses, though. The truss rod on either bass can compensate the neck for virtually any short scale bass string.
FAQ2: What are the differences between Hofner and Pyramid flat wound short scale bass strings? A: Both are made by the same German manufacturer. The chart below shows the comparison in string diameters.
D - .055
A - .070
E - .105
E - .100
FAQ3: The flat wound Hofner or Pyramid "E" string on my Hofner bass is not as bright in tone as the other strings. Is there something wrong with my "E" string? A: The low "E" string is in fact a lot less bright than the other strings in both Hofner and Pyramid brand flat wound string sets. This is normal, and in fact, you can hear difference in "low E" tone in Paul's recordings with the bass as well. Hofner was going for a "stand up" bass tone when they designed this bass and accompanying strings.
FAQ4: Is it true that I can invalidate the warranty on my RIC guitar or bass if I do not use RIC strings? A: The five year limited waarranty from Rickenbacker states: "The warranty is void if, upon inspection by RIC factory personnel, the defect is determined to be the result of damage due to misuse, exposure to environmental extremes, modification, or the use of replacement parts, including strings, not in conformity with factory specifications, or due to damage not resulting from a manufacturing defect."
FAQ5: Did the Beatles use Pyramid flat wound strings on their six and twelve string guitars? A: I don't know if anyone knows that for sure, but having played guitar in the sixties, I can tell you that flat wound strings were very popular then, much more so than today. I think it is fairly safe to say that the Beatles probably used flat wound strings on their electtic guitars.
The Beatles worked in Hamburg, Germany for many months, and it would be very possible they would have been introduced to Pyramid strings while there.
